This year marks the 23rd year that the Minnesota Chapter of the Risk Management Association will offer the Commercial Lending Academy (CLA). Since the program's inception, over 500 lenders, credit analysts and financial industry professionals from more than 95 institutions in the Midwest have graduated from the Academy.

The Commercial Lending Academy provides a comprehensive overview to the various aspects of the commercial loan underwriting and management process.

CLASS FORMAT: To minimize the time commitment away from the office, the material is organized into a five-day format: Monday, January 29th through February 2nd (8:00am - 5:30pm).

TOPICS COVERED WILL INCLUDE TWO SPECIAL SESSIONS:

  • OCC/FDIC
  • CCO Panel

The week will end with a credit presentation to an approver committee.

  • Presentation of a credit process for an efficient and organized path from initial request to developing a strong post-close relationship.
  • Understanding the existence of a cash shortfall that needs to be effectively analyzed with a solution provided by the banker.
  • Detailed methods to analyze key information from the borrower using the seven core cash drivers, cash to cash cycle, cash cycle, global cash flow, Traditional Cash Flow, UCA Cash flow as well as sensitivity analysis.
  • Assessing sustainable growth of a borrower and using it to assist the borrower in safe growth levels.
  • Using case studies to provide real world examples of what to look for and how to solve your clients’ problems, cementing the relationship with them.
  • Providing options for the optimal credit structure for your client using the right repayment structure, loan structure as well as proper covenant usage.
  • Recognizing early warning signs of stressed credits while laying out a decision matrix for determining rehab or exit of the lending relationship as well as providing the basics for starting a troubled credit action plan.
  • A capstone group project where you will analyze a client, prepare a credit presentation and present your solution before a real-life credit panel.

MAIN FACILITATOR: Brad Stevens - Brad is the founder of Stevens Risk Management, LLC which specializes in credit training and consulting for both the finance and manufacturing industry. He has over 30 years of experience in banking ranging from building strong credit portfolios as a banker, leading both lending and credit departments, as well as navigating banks through tough credit times. Brad brings a unique hands-on experience to his training sharing real world examples that resonate with those in attendance at presentations.

ITEMS TO BRING: Paper, pen, highlighter, calculator and a fully charged laptop.  (Course syllabus will be available on arrival.)

PRE-REQUISITES: A general knowledge of accounting, banking terminology and financial statements is highly recommended. Required: 3 years’ banking experience.

Completed 3-page Application and Full Payment must be submitted by January 5th.

TUITION: $1,500

  • Tuition will increase $50 for applications received after January 5th.
  • An additional 5% service charge will be added for credit card payments.

Tuition includes a continental breakfast, lunch, snacks, beverages, happy hours on Wednesday (1/31) with CLA attendees, Thursday (2/1) with RMA Board Members, and a graduation/chapter luncheon/event on March 20th. For non-affiliates, (if never been previously), you’ll receive a complimentary affiliation for the remainder of the term (ends 8/31/24).

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Completed application and tuition must be received by January 5 to complete the application process.

CANCELLATION POLICY: Email RMAmn@Outlook.com prior to January 5, 2024, and tuition will be refunded in full. Cancellations received after 1/5/24 (and no-shows) will be charged the applicable fee. Substitutions are allowed however the new candidate must go through the application/approval process and applicable tuition will be required.

IN ORDER TO GRADUATE, YOUR COMMITMENTS ARE:

  • To complete all pre-assignments to be sent via email from RMAmn@Outlook.com.
  • To attend all five (full) days of the Commercial Lending Academy and complete all assignments as assigned on a timely basis, including comprehensive inter-session homework.
  • To complete all daily course evaluations on a timely basis.

APPLICATION REVIEW PROCESS: Your completed 3-page application (and tuition) is required before the RMA Minnesota Chapter Commercial Lending Academy committee will review your application. You will hear back from us within five business days regarding your acceptance.

  • Wednesday, January 31 - with CLA attendees.
  • Thursday, February 1 - with RMA Board Members.

GRADUATION @ IN-PERSON CHAPTER LUNCHEON PROGRAM:
Wednesday, March 20 (11:30am - 1:15pm) at Minneapolis Club. The graduation ceremony will be held prior to the RMA Minnesota Chapter luncheon-meeting. Program will feature our annual regulator panel (TBD).
